TRAI Issued Draft policy for Mobile Number Portability

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued draft rules for Mobile Number Portability with allows customers to change their network service provider in any part around the nation without changing the existing mobile number.

But, right now Mobile Number Portability allows the customers to change their network service provider within the same service area limited to a state.

MNP allows customers to change one mobile network service provider to another network service provider without changing the mobile number. There are 22 telecom circles in India.

TRAI said “In view of Implementation of full MNP some changes will be required in the MNP Regulations 2009 (Amended). Draft amendment to the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulation, 2009 has been prepared accordingly.”

On November 3, 2014, TRAI issued an amendment to the MNP License Agreement and asked telecom operators to execute full MNP within a period of six months from the date of modification (Amendment) of license.

Under this amendment, TRAI wants to initiate a clause to protect the interest of postpaid mobile service consumers who face disconnection in new network even after the payment of all dues to the old network service provider. TRAI wants public comments on this matter within 6th February, 2015.

TRAI has fixed timeline on both the old network service provider and new network service provider for clear communication about the dues cleared by the subscriber for uninterruption of service to its customer.
